EARTHQUAKE SAFETY TIPS
Over the last 150 tears, Nevada has ranked third in the country for the number of large earthquakes. Since the 1850s 76 earthquakes with potentially destructive magnitudes of 5.5 or greater have occurred in the state. Considering the number of earthquake generating faults located in the state, it is important to know how to prepare for an earthquake, as well as how to take care during and after one hits.
Before
- Check your home for potential hazards. Place heavy items on lower shelves. Secure shelves to walls. Strap the water heater to keep it from falling.
- Know where and how to shut off electricity,gas and water at main switches and valves, if directed to do so.
During
- Stay calm.
- DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON. If you are not near a strong table or desk, drop to floor against an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms.
- If outdoors move to a clear area. If driving, pull to the side of the road and stop.
- If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
After
- Check the people around you for injuries; provide first aid Do not move seriously injured people unless they are in immediate danger.
- Check around you for dangerous conditions, such as fires, downed power lines and structural damage.
- If you have fire extinguishers and are trained to use them, put out small fires immediately.
- Turn off the gas if you smell gas.
